Bridge repairs to close lane on Garden State Parkway in Cape May County

Sep 15 2022

Only one of the two northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway will be open for most of the next two weeks in Upper Township, Cape May County, as construction crews replace the deck panels on a bridge over an abandoned rail line.

Week 1

The work will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19th.  Traffic will use the left lane to get by while the work proceeds in the right lane. That traffic pattern will remain in effect continuously until 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22nd.  At that time, both lanes will reopen and stay open through the weekend.

Week 2

The second phase of the work is scheduled to begin the following week, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26th. For that phase, traffic will get by in a single lane to the right while the work proceeds to the left. That traffic pattern will remain in effect continuously until 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29th, when the work will be complete and both lanes will be open to traffic.

In the event of inclement weather, the work will be rescheduled.

The bridge is located at milepost 23.1 northbound. It carries the Parkway over the abandoned route of the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines.

The work is part of a $9.3 million contract awarded in January 2022 to IEW Construction Group Inc. for the repair of 24 structures on the southern portion of the Garden State Parkway.

During the lane closures, drivers should allow additional travel time. Information about delays will be available by calling 511, visiting 511nj.org, or downloading the SafeTripNJ app.
