ADVISORY: Traffic shifting to the right on eastbound Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension as new phase of construction begins

Jul 11 2019

Eastbound traffic on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the Turnpike will be shifted to the right between exits 14 and 14A this weekend in connection with an ongoing construction project. The change will not affect the number of lanes through the area. A similar shift went in on the westbound side earlier this week.

By shifting traffic to the right in both directions, the contractor working on a $139 million rehabilitation of the Extension between interchanges 14 and 14A will be able to install construction barrier to establish a work zone in the middle of the roadway.

This new traffic pattern is scheduled to remain in effect until March 2020.

The shift will be installed overnight from 8 p.m. Friday, July 12th, until 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13th. The new traffic pattern is scheduled to remain in effect until March 2020.

The NJTA Board of Commissioners awarded a contract in January to the Schiavone Construction Co. LLC of Secaucus to reconstruct the bridge deck; repair and strengthen the structural steel; and make improvements to the lighting, parapet, and drainage system. The contract covers five structures on the Extension.

Drivers are advised to call 511 or download the SafeTripNJ app for real-time traffic information. Live views of the highway are available on the Traffic Cameras page of the Turnpike Authority website ( https://www.njta.com/travel-resources/camera-list).
