ADVISORY: Right lane of damaged Parkway bridge will reopen by Monday morning

Nov 03 2017

The right lane of the northbound Garden State Parkway local roadway just north of Exit 109 in Middletown will remain closed through the weekend while a contractor makes temporary bridge repairs. The lane will be reopened before the Monday morning rush hour, and the permanent repairs will be scheduled for a future weekend.

Two beams on the structure that carries local lanes of the Parkway over Middletown-Lincroft Road were damaged Thursday afternoon when they were struck by a back hoe being hauled on the bed of a trailer.  The right lane of the northbound local roadway north of exit 109 was to remain closed indefinitely while repairs were made.

Engineers assessed the damage Thursday night and Friday morning and settled on a repair strategy that involves installing temporary beams this weekend to shore up the structure and allow for the reopening of the right northbound lane of the Parkway before Monday.

The permanent repair will involve the installation of a new bridge deck panel with the beams attached. The deck and beams will be fabricated off site and installed during one weekend construction cycle.

To check on travel conditions in the area through the weekend, call 511 from a hands-free mobile device or download the SafeTripNJ smartphone app. Live traffic cameras views of the roadway are available under the Travel Tools tab on the Authority’s website, www.njta.com.
