ADVISORY: Thomas Edison Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike to close for construction

Sep 03 2018

The Thomas Edison Service Area on the southbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike between exits 12 and 11 will be closed for construction from Sept. 8, 2018, through late May 2019.

The existing structure will be demolished and a new one built in its place under agreements announced last year with service area contractors HMS Host and Sunoco. The work is being done at no cost to taxpayers or toll payers.

During construction, there will be no food or fuel services, no restroom facilities, and no parking available at Thomas Edison.

The nearest service areas for southbound drivers are Vince Lombardi or Alexander Hamilton to the north and Molly Pitcher to the south.

HMS Host will replace eight service areas on the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway and remodel six others under the agreement announced last year; Sunoco will make investments in fuel facilities and convenience stores at 21 Turnpike and Parkway service areas.

Plans call for the new Thomas Edison facility to include Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Pret A Manger, Starbucks, Auntie Anne’s, Z Market, and a Sunoco convenience store.

The new facility is expected to be open to the public again shortly before next Memorial Day Weekend.
