Eastbound lane of Turnpike Extension in Jersey City to close for 56 hours starting Oct. 17th

Oct 13 2023

An eastbound lane of the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike will be closed from Oct. 17th  to Oct. 19th between the Columbus Drive Exit and the eastern terminus of the Extension at Jersey Avenue in Jersey City.

Drivers should expect delays during the closure and allow additional time for travel.

The right lane and right shoulder will close at 4 a.m. on Oct. 17th and remain closed continuously until noon on Oct. 19th.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is planning to award a construction contract in mid-2024 for the rehabilitation of severely deteriorated bridge decks on structures between Interchange 14A and  Jersey Avenue.  The Board of Commissioners awarded an Order for Professional Services to Greenman-Peterson, Inc., for the design of this construction contract in April 2022.  When construction begins, the repairs to the eastbound structures between Columbus Drive and Jersey Avenue will require a series of long-term single-lane closures.

The Oct. 17th-19th lane closure will facilitate maintenance activities in a hard-to-reach area of the Extension and allow for data collection in preparation for those long-term closures.

The Turnpike Authority plans to replace the entire 8.1-mile Extension over the next 15 to 20 years. The rehabilitation of severely deteriorated bridge decks between Interchange 14A and Jersey Avenue is not part of the effort. Rather it is intended to keep the structures safe and in a state of good repair until the replacement is built.

Drivers who plan to travel on the eastbound Extension during the lane closure can check travel conditions by calling 511 from a hands-free device or by downloading the SafeTripNJ app. Live camera views of the Extension are available on the Traffic Cameras page at www.njta.com.
