ADVISORY: Traffic patterns to shift for bridge deck repairs on Hudson County Extension

Dec 04 2017

Traffic on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike from Interchange 14C to Christopher Columbus Drive will shift into a new alignment in preparation for a stage of bridge deck repairs.

The lanes of the westbound roadway will shift to the right, and one lane of the eastbound roadway will shift onto the westbound roadway. This new pattern, which will allow construction crews to make repairs to the eastbound bridge deck, will be put in place overnight on Saturday, December 16th, and will remain in place until the spring of 2018. The shift was originally scheduled to be put in place on December 8th but was postponed because of the weather.

The number of lanes on the Extension will not be reduced during construction, but drivers should be aware that eastbound vehicles in the left lane will not have access to the Christopher Columbus Drive off ramp.  Drivers who plan to exit at Columbus Drive should stay in the right or center lanes after they pass through the Interchange 14C toll plaza. Drivers who plan to exit to the Liberty Science Center should stay in the right lane after the toll plaza.

No shoulders will be present through the construction area while the lane shift is in place, but emergency pull-off locations will be provided.

For real-time traffic conditions in the area, drivers should call 511 from a hands-free mobile device or download the SafeTripNJ smartphone app. Links to live camera views of traffic conditions on the roadway can be found under the Travel Tools tab at the top of this page.
